Driving Packaging Excellence in Southern Africa
Overview
ALPLA in Southern Africa
ALPLA entered the Southern African market in 2014 with the opening of its first production facility in Kempton Park, South Africa, laying the foundation for today’s strong regional presence. Over the years, the business expanded through organic growth and the acquisition of a leading local provider of PET preforms, bottles and closures. A major milestone followed in 2020 with the investment in a next-generation production site in Lanseria, consolidating seven legacy locations under one roof. Production began in 2022, significantly enhancing operational efficiency, capacity and innovation.
Investing in skills and circularity
ALPLA’s long-term commitment to Southern Africa is reflected in targeted investments in people and sustainability. In March 2023, the company opened its first Apprenticeship & Training Centre in the AMET region, located in Lanseria, strengthening local talent development and technical capabilities.
This commitment was further reinforced in November 2024 with ALPLA’s entry into the South African PET recycling market through the inauguration of a state-of-the-art facility in Ballito. From 2025 onwards, the plant can produce up to 35,000 tonnes of high-quality rPET annually, supporting circular packaging solutions across the region.
A strategic hub for regional and international markets
Today, ALPLA Southern Africa operates across five locations in South Africa—Lanseria, Durban, Ballito, Dundee — and Mauritius—Port Louis, employing around 711 people. The region serves both domestic demand and a wide range of neighboring and international export markets across Africa (Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros, Mayotte, La Réunion, Gabon) and Europe (France, Germany). With ongoing investments and a strong operational base, Southern Africa remains a strategic growth and innovation hub within ALPLA’s African footprint.
